Why this happens so often
Wheel lock keys live in glove boxes, spare tire wells and centre consoles, and they get lost when a car changes hands or after a shop visit. Nobody notices until the moment they actually need the wheel off — usually on the shoulder of a road, in the dark, with a flat.
The other frequent culprit is the capped lug nut used on a lot of factory wheels. A thin chrome cap is pressed over a steel nut, and moisture works in behind it. The cap swells, the socket that used to fit spins uselessly, and the nut is effectively locked on even though it was never meant to be a security nut.

We start by checking whether a standard socket will still bite, since that is the least destructive option. If not, we drive an extraction socket onto the nut so it grips the damaged surface, then back it out with a breaker bar rather than an impact gun, which gives more control and less risk to the stud.
Once the wheel is free we inspect the stud threads. If a stud has been damaged we tell you before anything goes back together, because a compromised stud is a safety item, not a cosmetic one. The wheel is refitted with correct replacement nuts and torqued to specification.

Common questions
I lost the wheel lock key — can you still get the wheel off?
In most cases yes. We use extraction sockets that bite into the locking nut and back it out without the key. Bring the wheel lock key if you find it, because that is always the fastest and gentlest route.
Will removing a locking lug nut damage my wheel?
Removal is done against the nut, not the rim, and we protect the wheel face while we work. The locking nut itself is usually destroyed in the process and gets replaced with a standard lug nut.
What about a swollen or rusted lug nut?
Capped lug nuts on many late-model vehicles swell as the chrome cap separates from the steel underneath, and then the correct socket no longer fits. We size down to a bite-fit socket and remove them the same way.
